Bombshell Spotlight: Holly James

Holly J James is the Bombshell Spotlight this week and she’s on a mission to inspire and influence positive change in people’s lives and to spread the message that you have a choice, you have blessings and you have the power to create exactly the life you want. She’s a mother and a strong woman who chose to leave the corporate world to help people with their health and fitness.

Janie: Give us your story. What got you started in helping people lose weight and get healthy?

Holly: I found myself in the emergency room very sick with pneumonia after arriving home from a business trip. Even though I’d been eating healthy and exercise regularly, the stress and long works hours got to me. I decided that night in the hospital that I would change my lifestyle and help others to do that too.

Janie: What makes you different from other health/fitness coaches?

Holly: The difference between me and other health and fitness coaches is that I don’t put my clients on restrictive diets, crazy workouts routines or supplements that are not sustainable. We focus on what works for each individual’s unique needs. The best expert on what a client needs is themselves. The changes we make are behavioral and habitual, so they last long term.

Janie: So many people try and fail when it comes to losing weight and keeping it off. What can best help people stay healthy and fit, in your opinion?

Holly:  People get caught up in the latest and greatest diets and exercise routines, there are so many “experts” out there all with their own opinion as to how you should stay healthy and fit. What I teach my clients is that the only expert on you and your body is YOU. When you have a connected and healthy relationship with yourself, you’ll know exactly what to eat, how much of it to eat and when to stop eating. You’ll also be clear on what kind of movement your body and your mind enjoy. When we create rigidity in our health and fitness, it only lasts a short time. If we create balance and enjoyment, we want to do it and it creates good behaviors that last a lifetime.

Janie: Is there a motivational mantra or quote you love?

Holly: “Things are always working out for me.” It allows me to refocus on how things will work, rather than why they can’t.

Janie: Who are your inspirations? Give us one or two, and why.

Holly: JJ Virgin is one, I just saw her speak at a health conference over the weekend. She failed several times when starting out, but did not give-up and then got her family through the tragedy of her son’s accident while at the same time preparing what turned out to be a best selling book. She prevailed through adversity and found success, a huge inspiration.

Another is David Neagle, he also experienced a life changing accident and now lives his life helping others to get through what is holding them back from their own greatness.

The honesty and authenticity that these two people live by through their work and the high standard that they hold themselves up to deeply inspires me.

holly james wedding

Janie: Besides the fitness what are your hobbies? Things you love to do and enjoy?

Holly: Traveling with my husband to new places is one of my most favorite things to do. Getting outside hiking and paddle boarding are high on the list. The best moments I think are making dinner together with my husband, enjoying a glass of wine while we cook and then sitting together around the dinner table with all the kids enjoying food and conversation.

Janie: What are some future goals of yours?

Holly: My biggest goal is to help as many people as I can live healthy, happy lives in a body they adore.

Janie: What are you most grateful for?

Holly: I am most grateful for the challenges, some of them very painful, that I have encountered in my past, if they had not happened I never would have realized my strength.

Janie: People are often criticized for only showing the “good” things in their life on social media. So let’s be relatable to the readers for a second. What is something you struggle with?

Holly: Well I do have days or moments in days where I get down on myself or am hard on myself and begin that downward spiral. I have to get in there with the mindset work quickly before I get dragged down to that dark yucky place!

Janie: Everyone loves good food. What is your favorite healthy treat?

Holly: Coconut milk ice cream!

Janie: What’s something most people don’t know about you?

Holly: I was very much a tomboy when I was a kid. Had my hair short, dressed like a boy and liked to play in the dirt with Tonka toys!

Janie: If you could give one piece of advice to the readers, what would it be?

Holly: Invest in yourself. The better the relationship you can create with yourself, the better your life will be. And that is PRICELESS.

Bombshell Spotlight: April Boyd

The Bombshell Spotlight is a very strong woman named April Boyd. She is a registered social work therapist, and has supported thousands of people over the past decade through grief, loss, trauma and tragedy.  Then tragety stuck her own life. Her work took on new levels of meaning and purpose after her daughter Nora passed away unexpectedly when she was one day old. So she started the Love & Loss Project helping other women deal with a great loss such as hers.

Janie: Sadly, you lost your baby at 1 day old, how did you change from grieving to making her loss into something positive?

April: My work as a private practice therapist had taught me some crucial things that helped me when I experienced what it takes to survive tragedy first hand.

One of those things was this:  I knew that I was going to be changed by this experience.  And I could either become bitter, hardened and shut down, or I could grow.  I could expand.  I could find a way to come out the other side of this as a stronger, better version of myself.

I chose the later.  And I knew I needed to do so for one very specific reason:

If I crumbled and self-destructed that would be the story that would be told about my little girl, Nora.  In hushed tones within my circle of friends and family, she would be referred to as the reason why her mother was now a mess.  And I refused to let that to become my daughter’s legacy.

Janie: Many women experience the loss of a child, be it miscarriage or after birth, how can they move pass this, in your opinion?

April: First, you don’t need to know how you are going to survive this; just start by deciding that you will, that you need to.

Remember that your lost little one would want you to feel alive again.  They would want you to feel joy again.  So give yourself permission to return to life in honor of them.  You will figure out the rest as you go.

Janie: You’ve started a business around this, called the Love and Loss Project. Tell us about that and how you are helping other women.

April: I created The Love & Loss project because I had encountered first hand the gaps in services and the stark absence of social dialogue about loss.  I wanted to make really good support available to women any time of day or night, regardless of income or location.

So the Love & Loss Project is my online comfort and inspiration station for women who have experienced the loss of a baby, pregnancy or child.  It is full of free resources, tools, Q & A videos, and tonnes of tips for life after loss.  And I’m also going to be opening up a couple more spots for people to work with me one to one.

Janie: Is there a motivational mantra or quote you love?

April: “We’re here for a good time, not a long time.”

I don’t mean that in the reckless teenager sense. I mean that you need to take radical responsibility for your life.  Live the life you want to live now.  Have the conversations you need to have now.  Spend your time doing what matters most.  Let go of all that no longer serves you.

I also love this one:

“Begin what you want to do now.  We are not living in eternity.  We have only this moment, sparkling in our hand and melting like a snowflake.”  Francis Bacon, Sr.

Janie: Who are your inspirations? Give us one or two, and why.

April: Danielle Laporte. I love her attitude, philosophy and especially her Desire Map.  It’s an amazing book that focuses on creating “goals with soul,” which is all about getting really clear about what we are chasing and why so we can live more consciously and authentically.

Janie: What are your hobbies? Things you love to do and enjoy?

April: Running, Working Out, Hot Yoga.  I had always been really active but I fully believe that grief is a physical experience and needs to be treated as such.  There were days when I think I would have exploded if I wasn’t burning off the pain and the rage with a good long run.

I’m also a nature lover. There’s something about getting out in the woods that soothes my soul.  And traveling. I love exploring new places and ways of life.

Janie: What are some future goals of yours?

April: I have 100s.

I’ve recently agreed to run my first half-marathon. (insert nervous teeth chattering here)

I want the Love & Loss Project to positively impact as many people as possible.

I want to you all to join me on a healing retreat; I’m thinking Mexico 2017.

And though much less likely to actually occur, I want to become the Pack Leader for my six-pound Yorkie Sasha who is quite certain she is the boss of me.

Janie: What are you most grateful for?

April: Everything.  The good, the bad, the excruciating.  All of it.

And my guy.  He rocks my world.  Sometimes literally. Right now he’s singing and playing guitar beside me as I write this.

Janie: What’s something most people don’t know about you?

April: Sometimes I’m told that people look at me or they listen to my work and they think I have it all figured out.  I don’t.  And I don’t believe there is any such thing.  I’m committed to living with as much purpose and passion as possible and this is always a work in progress.  I’ve learned a lot, but I still have more questions than answers.  I think I always will.  I hope I’m still questioning and challenging myself when I’m 80.

Janie: If you could give one piece of advice to the readers, what would it be?

April: Burn bright & travel light.

And I want to say thank you for being a part of this conversation with me.  The topic of loss is one that we universally and instinctively want to pull away from, but I believe there is so much power, beauty and connection in looking at this shadow side of life.  It helps us to live and love more fully.  And this is one of the ways I keep my little girl with me.

So thank you. And if you want to continue this conversation with me you can do so at

Wow! What an inspirational woman. If you are struggling with something like this please don’t hesitate to talk to her. I loved this interview. It’s so much different than any of the other women I have featured. As some of you may know I had my own loss of a baby through miscarriage and it’s one of the hardest things I ever went through. Bombshell Spotlight: Carly Reeves

Carly Reeves has  risen to the top of her online business and is a total BOMBSHELL! She’s a wife and mother, who didn’t even like make up all that much and yet still is one of the top people in the Younique beauty company. She doesn’t let anything hold her back! Read on to learn her ways and more about this amazing woman.

Carly Reeves Bombshell Interview. Younique top leader

Janie: What got you started with your Younique business?

Carly: I had recently moved to Albuquerque NM with my husband and 3 kids and didn’t know anyone. I was at home with my 3 little crazies (Ages 3 month to 5 years) and I needed something. I had always worked and gone to school my whole marriage and was going a little crazy being at home all the time with no friends or escape. We also needed to make some extra money. My husband’s job was such a blessing and the reason we moved to NM but after the bills were paid every month, we didn’t have anything left over. No savings and lots and lots of school debt. I saw my cousin Angie posting pictures of our mascara on FB and I had to order it so I could see if it really worked like everyone said it did. So I ordered, it came, I put it on, and signed up a few minutes later. The rest is history.

Janie: Have you always loved makeup?

Carly: No. I have never even liked makeup, much less loved it. I have always worn drug store makeup and usually bought whatever was cheapest. I am a very low maintenance person so the time it took to apply makeup and fix my hair was way too much for me so it never interested me at all. But wow have I learned some tricks since! Before Younique I had never put ANY type of color on my lips. You couldn’t have bribed me to. Now I am obsessed with rocking the bright pinks and reds and think of what a boring life I would have lived if I would have never discovered colored lipsticks J

Janie: What is your current status in the company and what does it mean?

Carly: My current status in Younique is Black Status Level 1. Black Status is our highest status. Within Black Status are 3 levels. The first one is our car bonus. I am one of 7 presenters that have hit this Level 1 car bonus and super proud of that. The team I work with is relentless.

Janie: So many people join a company like Younique and never get anywhere. What do you think you did that made a difference?

Carly: When I joined Younique I made a decision to work hard and be 100% consistent. I also decided from the very beginning that I would not let what other people thought or said effect what my goals were and my success. So that’s exactly what I did. I believed in this opportunity and could see myself hitting the top of the company. All I had to do was work hard and stay consistent to get there. I was very relentless and worked very hard every single day. I blocked any negativity that came my way and remained positive daily. I knew it was a journey and I could do anything I set my mind to.

Janie: Any tips on how others can become successful with Younique or any online business?

Carly: Consistency!!! Stay consistent. You will never see instant results when building a business. If you are consistent then you will plant seeds every single day that will later on bring you reward. And the world is changing. People aren’t going to brick and mortars anymore. They are started to purchase everything more and more online from their homes. Running an online business can be extremely profitable if you work every single day. You can expand your network endlessly all over the world through social media. The possibilities are endless with a business like Younique.

Janie: How do you stay so motivated?

Carly: I do a lot of personal development. You have to in a business like this. I always make sure not to dwell on negative energy and try to turn everything into a positive. It’s a crucial trait when you are a leader. I also stay motivated because of the people I work with. So many of them inspire me with their stories and the way they work and it keeps me going every single day. And when I see people on my team growing and finding success (whatever that looks like to them) it truly keeps me pumped. I wake up excited and go to bed excited every single day.

Janie: Is it difficult balancing mom life and the biz?

Carly: Yes it can be very difficult some days, but so worth it. I am home with my kids every single day and am able to support my entire family at the same time. It’s also given me the chance to set that example for my kids and I’m really grateful for that. But yes, it gets crazy and tricky most days but I have learned and gotten better at time management over the past couple of years.

carly reeves Younique leader with her family

Janie: Anytime you reach a certain level of success there are haters. How do you handle any negative feedback, comments?

Carly: I honestly just delete them and move on. I have learned that it only reflects them and not me. In order to run a successful business and uplift and inspire others as a leader is to keep all negativity out of your life. I preach this. I will not give it any attention at all because there are so many others in my life that love and support me.

Janie: Who are your inspirations?

Carly: One of my biggest inspirations is my Sister Jordan. She has been through more in her life than any other person that I know and she continues to fight every single day. She wakes up and takes care of her family and she ALWAYS laughs through it all. She doesn’t take herself or her situation too seriously and although has been through hell and back, she’s still one of the most fun and uplifting people to be around. I have always wanted to be more like her and I still do.

Janie: Besides makeup what are your hobbies? Things you love to do and enjoy?

Carly: Oh I love love love music. Before Younique and babies and all that I was in an indie rock band called A Film in the Ballroom. I spent a lot of time writing music and performing. We even recorded a couple of albums. I love going to concerts as well. I also love soccer and my husband and I have our favorite teams we watch together. And of course my kids. I especially love going to their activities and watching them grow and become really cool people.

carly reeves singing

Janie: What are some future goals of yours?

Carly: As far as Younique goes, I would love to have at least 10 more Black Statuses on my team. The amazing thing about Younique’s mission and compensation plan is that it’s built for everyone to succeed and make money. Not just a few at the top. The leaders on my team are so amazing and I can’t wait to celebrate them when they hit the top. Another goal of mine is to share this opportunity with as many people as I can and continue to work hard in helping my team find success.

Janie: What are you most grateful for?

Carly: I am beyond blessed in my life and is so difficult to pick one thing I’m most grateful for, but it would most definitely be my family. My husband Andrew is the most patient and loving person in the world. He balances me out so much and loves me through all my crazy. He’s so unbelievably supportive as well. And my 3 little monsters.. They make me crazy everyday but I couldn’t imagine this world without each of them. So blessed to have such an amazing family and be entrusted with 3 of God’s angels.

Janie: People are often criticized for only showing the “good” things in their life on social media. So let’s relate to the readers for a second. What is something you struggle with?

Carly: Oh man, I could name a few LOL. First off, I struggle with doing makeup! I have built an organization with over 20,000 women who all share our amazing products so it’s pretty ironic that I struggle with how to even put it on.  I also struggle with time management and asking for help. I tend to kill myself with work and things I need to do before I will ask my team or leaders to help me and I need to work on that more. And I also REALLY struggle with eating healthy lol.

Janie: Where can the readers find you? Website/social names?

Carly: They can find me on Facebook at: and they can email me at My website to look at our amazing products is

Such a great interview! Very informative and inspiring. If you’re interested at all in Younique makeup or joining the company, she’s your girl! Send her an email

Bombshell Spotlight: Brandi Walker

Bombshell Friday brings to you a unique fashion blogger! Her name is Brandi Walker and she’s what one might call a “thrifty shopper.” She has a vintage style and guess what? If you love her outfits and accessories you can purchase them from her store on Instagram @stylish_treasures Find out more by reading below

brandi walker

Janie: You’re a fashion blogger but not just any fashion. What got you into thrift store shopping?

Brandi: I remember going to thrift stores once in a while with my parents when I was little. Remember when Doc Martins were supppper popular? I remember finding a pair at a thrift store for $5 when I was about 11 and felt like the coolest ever. I really started getting more into it after I served an LDS mission in Brazil. I had a couple of native Brazilian companions that liked to check out the thrift stores. They DO NOT compare to the stores here in the USA. They’re more like the front of someones house with clothes piled past your head that you have to dig through.. haha. I got a pair of pants for 25 cents and thought that was amazing. So when I got home, I started going to thrift stores and found that I was spending a little but finding the most amazing things! I quickly became addicted.
Janie: And you have your own online store now? What kind of clothes/items do you have on there?
Brandi: I have been told multiple times that I have an old soul. I love old music and I love finding old clothes. I sell mostly vintage clothing but also find really great gently used name brand items as well. Recently I started finding vintage baby and toddler items that I’ve decided to post couple days a month. I call it my “shop” but I sell strictly on Instagram. I’ve had my Instagram shop for over 3 years now. It was been the most effective outlet for me so far and I absolutely love it!
Janie: You just got married! How are you enjoying married life?
Brandi: I have been so happy these past few months of marriage. I married my absolute best friend. I love spending every moment with him. He is patient and kind and loving. Most importantly he supports all of my future goals and dreams. I couldn’t have picked a better mate. He is the love of my life and I’m so incredibly happy.
brandi-allen wedding
Janie: Is there a motivational mantra or quote you love?
Brandi: “Live the little things”….So often we get so caught up in all the larger things in life, we forget its the little things all together that make up that big picture. So honestly, everyday, I try to remind myself to be grateful for the little things in my life. Not to ever overlook the little things. I actually have a print of this phrase in our living room so I can be reminded on a daily basis not to take anything in my life for granted. Not to say I still don’t have room to improve, but I’m sure trying…
Janie: Anytime you reach a certain level of success there are haters. How do you handle any negative feedback, comments?
Brandi: I haven’t had a lot of negativity pointed toward me, thank goodness. Not to say I haven’t had it at all though. I won’t lie…It’s hard not to take it personally. I’ve even cried over it. But I try to remind myself that everyone has their own opinions and may not totally agree with your point of view and thats ok. God is always first for me. Prayer for peace and understanding has always been the most helpful in finding comfort and clarity. I have also found a lot of comfort in friends and family that lift me up to remind me why I do what I do and have helped me know how to address the situation. Sometimes, erasing those negative people from my life has been a necessity and honestly I think it’s been ok to do. I sometimes would feel bad but realize that it’s healthier for me to do so. Feedback is great and often necessary!! But negative feedback is just ugly and cruel. If you don’t like something, stop following…You don’t know what sort of impact your negativity can have on someone. It’s not worth it. Thumper’s words in Bambi are very wise, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”

Janie:Who are your inspirations? Give us two or three, and why.

Brandi: My fashion inspiration would be Beth Jones from B. Jones Style blog at She has been my favorite for as long as I can remember…. She is an avid thrifter and her style is extremely eclectic. I love that she isn’t afraid to take risks and create her own style rather than follow trends! She makes her own trends and finds inspiration in the most fun places. For example, I remember her loving looks from the new Chanel catalog…she would totally put a similar look together on her own with pieces she’s found at second hand stores and look fabulous! Not only that, she has shared her fitness journey after having two kids. She shares her struggles and I find her really down to earth and relatable.

I know its kinda cliche, but my mom and dad have always been my biggest inspirations. Not only have they been wonderful parents but they’ve supported me through every little thing I’ve ever wanted to do. From dancing my butt off all growing up, to running marathons, to serving my LDS mission, and then starting my business. They’ve always encouraged me to take risks, follow the Lords council and theirs, and to find my happiness.  They’ve been examples in the way the treat each other, how they took care of us as kids, even little things like always having scripture study as a family and family dinners. My mom is the most compassionate person I have ever met. She puts everyone before herself and always has. My dad is the best listener in the world. You talk to him and you know he has a genuine interest in everything you’re saying. They are and always will be inspirations to me. I take little bits and pieces of them on a daily basis that I know I want to and need to incorporate in my own life.

brandi walker

Janie:Besides the fashion what are your hobbies? Things you love to do and enjoy?

Brandi: I try to be active. I love taking walks and running. I’ve been a runner for a lot of years. I try to sign up for some sort of race each year to keep me motivated. We love camping with our dog Huckleberry and going on road trips. I absolutely love traveling and seeing new places. I also love hiking. Honestly I think that would be my number one favorite thing to do. It is so fun for me to see beautiful country and smell the fresh air while getting an awesome workout.

brandi walker and family

Janie:What are some future goals of yours?

Brandi: Oh man…this is a hard one. Only because I make new goals on a weekly basis. I always have ideas rushing through my brain. I definitely always make a goal to keep moving forward. Here are some of my current goals: Continue building and networking my business. Learn to use my dslr camera better. Stay fit especially before we start having kids. I want to stay in good shape while I’m pregnant and after. Oh yeah, kids are really one of our biggest future family goals. I’ve always wanted to be a mom. Be a better version of myself than I was yesterday. That is a daily struggle hehe. Travel more! ok… I’ll share one more…Learn new recipes. Most if not all my goals center around my family which I love. It’s so fun to progress through life’s changes.

Janie:What are you most grateful for?

Brandi: Another hard one because I have so much to be grateful for in my life. I am most grateful for my husband. For our eternal relationship. I’m grateful for my parents who raised me so well and still show undying love for me. Grateful for my siblings (including in law families) and their children. I LOVE being an aunt!!  I’m grateful for the companionship of my dog Huckleberry. I know it seems ridiculous and cheesy but he is very devoted and loyal to us. I’m grateful to know God is real and he loves me and cares for me. I’m grateful for my membership in the LDS church. It gives me meaning and guides my entire being. I’m grateful to be an American and for my freedom. I’m grateful for my health. I could seriously go on and on.

Janie:People are often criticized for only showing the “good” things in their life on social media. So let’s be relatable to the readers for a second. What is something you struggle with?

Brandi: Hmmmmm….I think my biggest struggle is comparing myself to others. Seeing the success of others and comparing my own successes to it. Asking why I can’t get to that point. Ugh…It’s a daily battle. I want to be inspired by people and try to let that be the case but sometimes I find myself envying it and wishing I could be like them or look like them or have what they have. There is a part in a movie I like called “The Family Man.” Have you seen it? He’s telling his wife how much better their lives could be and how much more money they could have and that people could envy their lives if they could just change everything… she is upset because she doesn’t want to change. And when he says they could have a perfect life, a life that everyone will envy, she answers him, “They already do envy us!” I love that because it reminded him that despite their struggles, they had an amazing life. It reminds me to see how much good I have in my life and how successful I really am and that I don’t want to be like anyone else. I want to be me and have what I have and keep doing what I’m doing. It’s still hard though hehe. This is a motivational speech I have to give myself.

Janie: Everyone loves good food. What is your favorite treat?

Janie:What’s something most people don’t know about you?

Brandi: I grew up with a love of dance. When I was younger, I always dreamed to be a prima-ballerina. My ballet instructor always raved that I had the best feet and they would get me far in the dance world. I was doing ballet and then got into ballroom dancing…Both began to be too much so I ended up quitting ballet in high school to give all my time and attention to Ballroom dancing. I did that all through high school and college! I even performed on an adult team just a couple years ago for 2 years and we competed in Las Vegas and California! I still love to dance and love to watch any kind of dance. I have a deep love and respect for dancers.

Janie:If you could give one piece of advice to the readers, what would it be?

Brandi: Find happiness in every aspect of your life. Even your trials. Wake up and tell yourself, “Today, I choose to be happy.” Then go on with your day! Smile and laugh. It’s the best medicine.  I also believe that if you’re ever feeling alone, know that you’re not alone. God is there and he loves you. He has angels round about you to lift you up as well…

Janie:Where can people find you. What’s your website/social accounts?
